How to clean swimming pool cartridge filters?
Cleaning swimming pool cartridge filters is essential for maintaining water clarity and filtration efficiency. Here's how to clean them effectively:
1) Turn off the Pump: Before beginning the cleaning process, turn off the pool pump to prevent any water flow through the filter system.
2) Remove the Filter: Open the filter housing and remove the cartridge filter from the filter housing. Take note of the orientation of the cartridges to ensure they are reinstalled correctly.
3) Rinse the Cartridges: Use a garden hose with a nozzle attachment to rinse off loose debris and dirt from the cartridge filters. Start from the top and work your way down, ensuring thorough coverage of each pleat.
4) Soak the Cartridges: Prepare a cleaning solution by mixing a cartridge filter cleaner or a mild detergent with water in a large bucket or tub. Submerge the cartridges completely in the cleaning solution and allow them to soak for at least 24 hours. This helps to loosen and dissolve stubborn debris and oils trapped in the filter media.
5) Brushing: After soaking, use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub the cartridges, paying close attention to areas with heavy buildup. Be careful not to damage the filter pleats during brushing.
6) Rinse Again: Once the cartridges have been thoroughly scrubbed, rinse them again with a hose to remove any remaining cleaning solution and dislodged debris. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear.
7) Inspect for Damage: While rinsing, inspect the cartridges for any signs of damage, such as tears, cracks, or worn-out pleats. Damaged cartridges should be replaced to ensure proper filtration.
8) Reassemble and Reinstall: Once cleaned and inspected, reassemble the filter cartridges and reinstall them in the filter housing. Ensure they are properly seated and secured according to the manufacturer's instructions.
9) Restart the Pump: After reinstalling the cartridges, close the filter housing and restart the pool pump. Monitor the filter pressure gauge to ensure proper water flow and filtration.
10) Regular Maintenance: Clean the cartridge filters regularly, ideally every 4-6 weeks during the swimming season or whenever the filter pressure increases by 8-10 psi above the normal operating pressure. Regular maintenance helps to prolong the life of the cartridges and ensures optimal filtration performance.
