Design Insights - The thinking behind the Titan Pool Reel
For those who love the details, this page takes you behind the scenes. Here we provide some engineering insights into why the Titan swimming pool reel is designed the way it is.
Smart sectional design for economical worldwide delivery
Most pool reels rely on long tube sections that can not be posted by air, leaving non-uk customers with two poor choices: wait weeks for delivery by sea, or pay extra to local distributors and resellers who hold pre-shipped stock nearer to them.
Titan takes a better approach. Its main tube is built up from short, precision made sections that overlap, interlock and bolt together, creating an exceptionally rigid tube which can be flat packed.
The result is a stronger tube that packs down small enough for cost-effective air freight, letting us post directly to you both quickly and affordably - while not needing any middlemen between us who add on their costs.
Our customers then get a top quality pool reel delivered quickly, and often at a lower price than if they bought an inferior one from a local pool store.
Strength from structure - the oversized main tube
At the heart of every Titan lies the 140mm (5.5in) diameter main tube which carries the pool cover. This is far larger than the main tube used in most manual pool reels, or powered ones. Bigger isn’t just for show though, as larger tubes flex less, can carry more load, and last longer.
That extra diameter on the Titan’s main tube means it won't buckle if someone sits upon it, and bearly deflects under the weight of a wet pool cover, even if its upto 8.0m (26ft 3in) wide. Smaller-diameter tubes bend far more, which inevitably results in over stressing them causing metal fatigue and a much shorter lifespan.
Built-in protection - the torque-limiting clutch
Accidents happen: a snagged strap or clumsy pull on the pool cover can stress a pool reel’s gearbox or tear the straps out of the cover. The Titan prevents this damage by using a self-resetting mechanical clutch inside the main tube.
If excessive force is ever applied, the clutch simply jumps round a notch to protect the cover and mechanism. Once the excess force is released, it re-engages automatically. It’s a safeguard that rarely sees action, but quietly ensures long-term reliability.
Easy alignment - swivel joints at both ends
Even a very strong aluminium tube will flex slightly under load or temperature change — just as a steel road bridge does on a larger scale. To accommodate these natural movements gracefully, the Titan uses ball-and-socket swivel joints at both ends of the main tube.
These joints allow the reel to adjust its angle fractionally as the cover’s weight shifts or as the aluminium expands and contracts with temperature. One end is also spring-loaded to absorb thermal movement as the seasons change.
These swivel joints also make installation easier by compensating for small misalignments or unevenness in the pool deck. It’s just one of many subtle details — but its details like this which set the Titan apart.
Remote control as standard - freedom and safety
Many electric pool reels require the user to kneel down by an end stand pressing a button or turning a key. Titan’s remote-controlled design removes that restriction. The handheld key fobs allow full movement around the deck, so you can guide the cover as it rolls on or off (if needed).
For safety, the system always stops if the key fob’s button is released, rather than mindlessly carrying on until perhaps a second press is received or an end stop is reached. Each reel comes with four uniquely coded fobs operating on two approved frequencies for safety and interference protection.
Intelligent electronics - Titan’s custom controller
Titan’s electronic controller is the brain of the system. It manages every function from motor drive, overloads, battery management and key-fob pairing, all while reporting real-time status through its clear LED display.
Key features include:
Smooth acceleration and braking: protects the cover and gearbox.
Over-current protection: stops operation instantly if a jam occurs.
Battery management: temperature-compensated charging prevents over charging.
Battery status display: shows charge level or any battery issues.
Key-fob pairing: stores up to eight remotes; easily teaches new ones.
Override buttons in case a key fob isn't to hand.
Solid-state design: no mechanical relays to wear out.
We also have a dedicated page to show all the different display modes that the controller can report, most of which are pretty intuitive as you would expect.
Engineered performance
Every aspect of the Titan is engineered with a single guiding principle: uncompromising quality. With exceptional structural strength, advanced safety features, and intelligent control, it offers outstanding durability and more time spent enjoying your pool - not maintaining it.
